Zcash is a credible private Bitcoin. It is not the new Bitcoin yet.
What the chain, the ETF flows, the social data, and the backers say about the story, plus the dates and price levels that would make me add or exit.
Abstract
Zcash is being sold as the new Bitcoin: the same 21 million coin cap, the same halvings, the same mining, with privacy added. I wanted to know whether that story has teeth, so I checked it against four kinds of evidence: what is happening on chain, where ETF money is going, what the social data shows, and who is actually backing it. My conclusion is that Zcash is a credible private Bitcoin with real institutional support and a committed core of holders. It is not the new Bitcoin yet. Usage has stopped growing, it trades like a high risk coin instead of insurance, and the current price already assumes much of the story plays out. All figures are as of October 8, 2026.
The working thesis
Bitcoin proved that a fixed supply can become a monetary asset. Zcash asks whether the same design, with privacy built in, can earn a share of that role.
The pitch is simple. Bitcoin’s ledger is fully public, so every holder’s balance and history can be traced. Zcash keeps Bitcoin’s monetary rules and lets holders move coins into a shielded pool where amounts and addresses are private. If privacy becomes something large holders are willing to pay for, a private Bitcoin has a real market.
A story is not a thesis. A thesis says what should be visible in the data if the story is true. For Zcash, that means coins moving into the private pool, people actually transacting, money arriving through regulated products, and the asset holding its value when markets sell off. So I graded each one.
What the chain says
The private supply grew for real. Then it stopped growing while the price tripled. That is the key finding in this paper.
Figures as of October 8, 2026
Adoption was real, then it went flat
The shielded share of supply rose from about 8% in early 2024 to 30% by November 2025. That was real adoption: holders choosing privacy with their own coins. Since then the share has sat at about 30% for 11 months. Over the same period the price tripled. The price has been rising without new coins moving into the feature that justifies it.
Holders are committed
After the Orchard bug in June, Zcash closed that private pool to new deposits and opened a new one, Ironwood. Nothing forced holders back in. They moved voluntarily, and Ironwood now holds 4.07M ZEC. People who did not believe in the privacy case would have stayed in public addresses.
Activity is small and falling
The network handles about 7,300 transactions a day. October is running at half of September’s pace, and most of that activity is not even private. Zcash today looks like a store of value that people hold, not a payment network that people use.
Flows and attention
The regulated money has turned around, and the crowd is getting quieter.
ETF flows have reversed
Grayscale’s Zcash ETF saw US$93.6M of outflows in the week to October 2 and about US$12M more this week. On October 6 the Winklevoss twins filed for a second Zcash ETF under the ticker WINK. That is a filing, not new buying. It tells me serious people want the product to exist. It does not put a dollar into the market today.
Mentions are draining
On October 6, the day of the ETF filing, crypto social media mentioned ZEC 122 times. That is under a fifth of the September 18 peak. Reddit had only 12 mentions in the last 7 days. A second ETF filing should be a loud day. It was a quiet one.
On this coin, chatter peaks have come before price peaks by days. It happened on August 22 to 23 and again from September 6 to 18. Falling attention is not a sell signal on its own, but it has been an early one here.
Who is behind it
The names are big. They are also few, and not all of them are neutral.
- Naval RavikantStarted the run in October 2025 with the line “Zcash is insurance against Bitcoin.” The post did not mention that he invested in Zcash’s founding company in 2015.
- Arthur HayesSet a target of 10% of the Bitcoin price, about US$8,200 today. He sold his entire position after the Orchard bug.
- The Winklevoss twinsThey have the most money in: a public Zcash treasury company, a mining fleet, and the new ETF filing.
- Multicoin and Mert of HeliusAlso backers, adding fund and builder credibility to the story.
- The core communityIt is real. 66% of eligible coins voted in the encrypted holder poll.
I read this as genuine conviction that is highly concentrated. A small group with large positions can carry a narrative a long way. It can also unwind quickly, and the most prominent price target already belongs to someone who has left.
Does “the new Bitcoin” have teeth?
Six tests. Three passes, one mixed, two fails.
| Test | Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin’s monetary design | Pass | Fixed 21M supply, halvings, and mining, like Bitcoin. |
| Institutional access | Pass | ETFs and a public treasury company: Bitcoin’s 2024 playbook. |
| Committed core community | Pass | Holders moved back into the new private pool and turned out to vote. |
| Influencer adoption | Mixed | Top names, but concentrated, some conflicted, and Hayes sold out. |
| Usage growth | Fail | Failing since November 2025. The shielded share is flat and activity is falling. |
| Insurance in a sell off | Fail | It trades as a high risk coin, not as protection. |
Zcash’s market value is about 1.2% of Bitcoin’s. That gap is the opportunity if the story plays out. It is also a measure of how far there is to go, and the current price already assumes a lot of that distance gets covered.
Dates and risk levels
A thesis needs an exit before it needs a target. These are the levels I am working with.
- The upgrade (NU7)
- The go or no go decision is due on October 20, with launch targeted for November 5. A delay or a bug could gap the price.
- Exit level
- A daily close below US$1,000.
- Risk per coin
- US$204 per ZEC from today’s price. US$341 on my first coin, bought at US$1,341.
- Risk limit
- If the exit triggers, the loss is capped at 0.5% of the portfolio. Coins bought higher carry more risk each, so they shrink the position that limit allows.
Signals to add
- Price reclaims the rangeA daily close back above US$1,300 to US$1,370 on strong volume.
- ETF flows turnThe Grayscale ETF going back to inflows.
- The upgrade is a goA go decision on October 20 while price holds the 50 day average.
The bigger signal is the one from section two. If the shielded share of supply starts climbing again, usage is confirming the price. If it stays flat while the price climbs, the story is doing the work on its own.
